The Transfiguration of Our Lord (2/3/2008)

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

Lessons:
     Exodus 24:12-18
     Psalm 2 (or 99)
     2nd Peter 1:16-21
     St. Matthew 17:1-9

Prayer of the Day:
O God, in the transfiguration of your Son you confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the witness of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice from the bright cloud you foreshadowed our adoption as your children. Make us  heirs with Christ of your glory, and bring us to enjoy its fullness, through Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

17.1 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Get up and do not be afraid.” 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone.

9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, “Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Called to Follow Jesus

Lessons:
     Isaiah 9:1-4
     Psalm 27:1, 5-13
     (NRSV: 27:1, 4-9)
     1st Corinthians 1:10-18
     St. Matthew 4:12-23

Prayer of the Day:
Lord God, your lovingkindness always goes before us and follows after us. Summon us into your light, and direct our steps in the ways of goodness that come through the cross of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

4.12 Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15  “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles — 16  the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” 17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea — for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21 As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. 23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

A man had fallen away from his church. A friend of his decided to give him a call about a tennis match they were scheduling for later that week. The friend called from the phone at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church where he was attending a meeting. The phone rang, and the man glanced at his Caller I.D. It said, “Christ the Lord.” He thought Christ the Lord was on the phone waiting for him to answer. This turned out to be a wake-up call for him, and in its own way, it motivated him to become involved in his faith community once again.

What Will They See?

Lessons:
     Isaiah 49:1-7
     Psalm 40:1-12
     (NRSV:  Psalm 40:1-11)
     1st Corinthians 1:1-9
     St. John 1:29-42

Prayer of the Day:
Holy God, our strength and our redeemer, by your Spirit hold us forever, that through your grace we may worship you and faithfully serve you, follow you and joyfully find you, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.  Amen.

1.29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.”

35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He first found his brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which is translated Anointed). 42 He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter).

There is a lot of “seeing” going on in this Gospel lesson. John the Baptist sees Jesus walking by, some time after he saw the Spirit descend and remain on Jesus. God told John that when he saw the spirit descend and remain on someone, then that would be the one. John sees that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus sees two of John’s followers now following him. They ask him where he is staying, and he answers: “Come and see.” Once they see where he is staying, they never leave. There is a lot of “seeing” going on in this Gospel lesson.

Who Is Jesus?

Lessons:
     Isaiah 421:1-9
     Psalm 29
     Acts 10:34-43
     St. Matthew 3:13-17

Prayer of the Day:
O God our Father, at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. Make all who are baptized into Christ faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons, and empower us all with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

3.13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” [2]

Who is Jesus? Many people have offered answers to that question over the years. Some believe Jesus to be the solution to all their failures and disappointments. Some believe Jesus to be the escape from all worldly concerns. Some believe that Jesus is the source of transformation for the world. Some even believe Jesus has no influence at all on the world: There are many different answers, these days, to the question, “Who is Jesus?”

Epiphany Season Sermons (2008)

Sunday, January 6th, 2008

Date: January 20, 2008
Liturgical Day: The Second Sunday after the Epiphany
Sermon Title: Come and See Jesus

Summary:

In this sermon Pastor Dave talks about one of his pet peeves (when composers quote John as saying “Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.” — instead of the Biblical “sin of the world”), and encourages us to witness like Andrew did, who said to his brother: “That’s what I think, but come and see for yourself.”

 Giving Our Best

Lessons:
     Isaiah 60:1-6
     Psalm 72:1-7, 10-14 (11)
     Ephesians 3:1-12
     Matthew 2:1-12

Prayer of the Day:
God, on this day you revealed your Son to the nations by the leading of a star. Lead us now by faith to know your presence in our lives, and bring us at last to the full vision of your glory, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

2.1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet:

6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for from you shall come a ruler
who is to shepherd my people Israel.’ ”

7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road.

Angela was 15 years old. She was no scholar – as a matter of fact, she was just barely making it at school. She was an athlete, though, and quite good at that. She also was somewhat of a trendsetter at school. Many of the other kids, especially the girls, were impressed with her and tended to follow her. One day she made an appointment with her Pastor. She had been studying stewardship in her Sunday School class, and wanted to know how she might be a better steward of God’s gifts to her. She didn’t think she had gifts that would be helpful to the church, and wanted to know if he had any insights as to what she could do.

Risendals at 7 Falls in Colorado Springs

Risendals at 7 Falls in Colorado Springs

This has been a challenging year for the Risendal family.

In the first half of 2007 we experienced the contamination of our entire home, the abatement of asbestos in our kitchen and the decontamination process, the monumental task of cleaning up after the hazardous materials crew, the marketing and selling of our home, the task of finding a different place to live, and the prospect of having to replace almost everything we owned. As we think back on the year, we’ve learned a great deal about what it means to start over from scratch, and we find ourselves very empathetic with those who, through natural or human disasters, lose everything.

We have also learned a great deal about the love of God and the importance of Christian community. It is not an exaggeration to say that if it weren’t for our God, and for our friends in this congregation, we can’t imagine how we would have made it through this year. From the very beginning, many Saint Peter members were instrumental in supporting us. Many offered prayers, and sent cards expressing their love and concern for us. Many spent countless hours in our old home, helping us clean and paint and repair – without their efforts, we could never have turned our home around as quickly as we did. And the gifts were so heartwarming: gift cards, clothing for the boys, help with furnishing our new home… If the purpose of a Christian community is to become a vehicle of God’s grace, you indeed fulfilled that purpose for our family during our challenges this past year.
