Sermon; The 2nd Sunday in Lent: "The Love of a Mothering Hen"
Date: March 17, 2019
Liturgical Day: The 2nd Sunday in Lent; Year C
Many images of Jesus have inspired faithful people throughout the ages. Yet the one before us today is less familiar and less often employed than many of the others: the image of Jesus as a mother hen, who longs to gather her brood under her wings. This is, of course, offered in strong contrast to the image of King Herod as a brutal and bloodthirsty fox. Herod may be determined to kill, but Jesus is determined to save, with the humility of a mother hen, and with the intensity of her fierce, vulnerable, loving, sacrificial and deeply committed love.
