Sermon; The 5th Sunday after Pentecost: Peace! Be Still!
Date: June 24, 2018
Liturgical Day: The 5th Sunday after Pentecost; Proper 7B
Faith can be understood as belief or trust. The Greek word for faith is πιστεύω (pisteuó), and one definition of this word is “to think to be true.” But another definition of this word is “to rely on or trust.” Jesus points to this second definition of faith in this morning’s Gospel lesson.
The disciples, by this time, had come to believe in certain things about Jesus. But during the wind storm on the Sea of Galilee Jesus shows them what it means to trust him. When talking about faith, there is a difference between belief and trust. They, and we, are called to lives of faith; lives of trust.
