Sermon; The 17th Sunday after Pentecost: "Who Do You Say that I Am?"
Date: September 16, 2018
Liturgical Day: The 17th Sunday after Pentecost; Proper 19B
When Jesus describes what it will mean for him to be God’s Messiah — one who suffers and is rejected and who dies and who is raised from death — Peter objects, and rebukes Jesus. Peter may have visions of power and might, but Jesus sees those as “human things,” not “divine things.” The kingdom of God is not a reality that is forced upon us by God’s power and might, but it is a kingdom into which we are all invited. Shall we take up our crosses and follow him? Shall we love God wholeheartedly, and our neighbor as ourselves? Shall we understanding ourselves as being sent into God’s world as a reflection of Christ? We shall! And as we do, we will begin to experience the life God wants for us.
