Sermon; The Baptism of Our Lord: "Faithful Expectation"
Date: January 13, 2019
Liturgical Day: The Baptism of Our Lord — The First Sunday after the Epiphany; Year C
Today’s Gospel lesson begins by informing us that, “the people were filled with expectation.” To be filled with expectation makes a significant impact on how an event is experienced. Think of the beginning of a new job; the founding of a new congregation; much less the first days of a new religious movement. It was this rich sense of expectation that caused the people of the first century to be drawn to John’s ministry, to be inspired by the life of Jesus and to be committed to the development of the early Christian church. This is still the case today. The degree to which we engage in our faith with a spirit of expectation will shape the experiences we have with God.
