Sermon; The 3rd Sunday after the Epiphany: "Grace, Compassion, Service"
Date: January 27, 2019
Liturgical Day: The 3rd Sunday after the Epiphany; Year C
This weekend’s Gospel lesson tells us the story of Jesus’ first sermon in his hometown of Nazareth. He has impressed the people, preaching and teaching around the country, and now he returns to his family and friends, neighbors and acquaintances. At worship he is handed the scroll that contains the writings of Isaiah, and he turns to the 58th and 61st chapters, in effect framing his own ministry in the same ideals of grace, compassion and service that Isaiah commended to the people of his day. It is a rousing call to make a difference in the world. His listeners respond enthusiastically, and frankly, so do we!
